Scenario: Nurse J is finishing her preceptorship in the busy medical-surgical unit. Nurse K has been in the medical-surgical unit for five years and thinks of Nurse J. Nurse K talks negatively about Nurse J in the unit and continually treats Nurse J badly. She talks to Nurse J’s patients behind her back and corrects Nurse J in front of her patients emphasizing what she has done wrong. Few patients in the unit witnessed Nurse K scolding Nurse J as she took the patient vital signs. Nurse J reported this uncivil behavior to her preceptor who did nothing about it and advised Nurse J to “just brush it off.”
